I should be more fannish these days

I actually feel like I've been doing a lot of fannish things lately, but they haven't really showed up much on LJ or elsewhere online. Still haven't written up a Chicago TARDIS post; I have to move my pictures over to my computer. I think I got myself unstuck on the WIP-o-Doom, which is good. But I am writing up this random post instead of writing the scene that unfolded in my head. So, yay procrastination. I will be so glad when this WIP is done. Gladder than finishing my dissertation, I swear!

Anyhow, it seems like the newest round of LJ's changes has driven people away in droves; or like in the past 6 to 8 months I've just seen a pretty steep decline in activity over here. I might end up having to move over to dreamwidth at some point, but I have like 9 years of entries on lj here that I would have to move over, which is kind of daunting. I was kind of scared of transferring all my pictures over, until LJ went and eff-ed with Scrapbook and messed up all the orders in my galleries anyway.

I had thrown out the idea a while back to maybe start a friending meme for those of us Whovians who are still stubbornly on lj. Would anyone be interested? Any idea how to go about doing that? I don't really have a very big footprint on lj, not particularly a BNF or a mod of anything or whatnot. Has anyone done a friending meme before?

Dreamwidth has an import feature that can automatically transfer your entries and comments, so it's a pretty painless process. And it can be set up to automatically crosspost, so if you're like me and want to maintain a presence in both places, you can do that with very little effort.

How does it do with friends-locking? I tend to lock a lot of posts on lj or put them through filters (eg ficreaders only or fandom only, or "not my family" etc); can it cross-post to different groups?

I think that might also be part of the "dying down" feel is that folks with longer histories are tending toward f-locking things. Or maybe it's just me. I am a bit paranoid about posting things publicly and if it's not overtly fannish, or if it has pictures or things like that I tend to just friends-lock it. Not that one couldn't poke around a little more to find pics of RL stuff (I think the galleries are all public), but it takes some effort.

Then again, all of this content is hosted in Russia these days, right? So in terms of true security for PII, it's basically security theater, I guess.

So far, it's been matching my customs friends groups quite well, keeping the flocked stuff flocked, and the custom stuff specific to people I had on the custom friends list. And when it cross-posts, it goes to the people on those lists, without any problems that I've seen. As far as I can tell, it all works just how I want it.

Yeah, I have a DreamWidth mirror journal, too, and as far as I know it's collected all two years of my LJ correctly and with the desired security groups.

This decline saddens me. :( I'm on both sites -- crossposting from DW, and both that and importing from LJ are v. easy, so there's that.

A friending meme is a great idea! I can't imagine anyone would say no to some more action here (I know it would help my own fannishness; it's not-particularly-there-atm). I've no idea how to do one, but from what it looks like on the surface -- link it everywhere, maybe slap on a graphic? There's probably some level of modding involved? Footprint, BNF or not, you are awesome and should go for it if you want to!

Activity on LJ has been dying down for quite a while now, but DW doesn't seem to be stunningly active either. I have a DW account, and most of my friends over there hardly ever post. I always forget to crosspost anyway, plus I just plain don't like DW much. I think a lot of people might have moved to Tumblr or elsewhere?

I'd take part in a friending meme for sure. I want more friends! Not that I've ever run a friending meme, but yeah, link to it in appropriate places, ask your flist to promote it, get Who Daily to include it in a listing, and hope it takes off.

In previous years, it took me ages to do a Chicago TARDIS post. I was much quicker this year because I made myself devote my first full morning and afternoon home after the con to transferring, scanning, and editing photos and videos. So I did make two public posts, but I still want to add a flocked one.

I've noticed that many people go to Tumblr and Twitter. I have a Twitter account that I keep forgetting to do anything with, and I just can't bother with Tumblr. (I like conversations, and Tumblr really doesn't seem to be made for that.)

Hm. A Graphic. A "tell me about you" kind of header (favorite doctors, favorite pairings if any, other things you like), and pimping around flists and comms... that shouldn't be too hard to start up.

Funny, I was just sitting here wishing LJ or Dreamwidth would do something (i.e. that somebody would talk to me... They have really, but I'm just around a lot these days and it doesn't feel like it!) But I'd rather have a friending meme that could be both. I can't promise to stick here if LJ does something that makes me feel unwell, which it hasn't yet, but it could easily do.

I could do with some friends over there as well as here. LJ is going to drive us over there.

And importing my LJ (four years' worth) took about five minutes when I did it a couple of weeks ago. It's really simple and so is cross-posting, so I really don't think you need worry. I find it annoying because I would so much rather be in one place and that place here, but it's just not working like that any more.

And, yeah, Tumblr's nice for all the pics, but it's no good for my fannish sorts of things - discussion and comms and fic and writing memes and all that kind of thing.

ETA: Of course, quietness round me is partly my fault for going on about v old and obscure things all the time, but never mind.

I think I am partly feeling that way too. A bit obsessive. What it really means is I should set things aside for a while, institute my leechblocks again or something, so as not to be just obsessively scrolling. But then part of me also thinks, "I should contribute more!" too. Double edged sword!

Part of my sapping of fannish strength lately is due to the WIP-o-Doom I think. It's the same as with my dissertation, the feeling of, "here I am and should be writing" so despite the fact i'm not, there is a reluctance to pick up new fandoms or read longer fics and stuff like that. it's frustrating. Which is why I want to be done with it.

Ha! I should start my Seven and Mel story too. Actually, I'd remembered a Buffy story I'd read a while back about a slayer from Papua New Guniea and I found the author's lj to leave a drive-by note (I think it was the right author; it was an older story and I didn't see the description jumping out at me in her listed fic) and ask where she did her research and/or if she had first-hand experience. I want to write that story but I don't want to mess up the setting. That is why alien planets are so much easier. you can't exactly get it wrong, you know?

I only have a pretty basic knowledge of Photoshop, but I might be able to make you something in a pinch if you can't find anyone else. (Assuming my algebra professor doesn't do horrible pre-finals things to our class this week. :P )

If you're trying to find a lot of people, have you seen the new comm who_at_50? It might be a good place to pimp and/or see if they wanted to host it.

I have never held a friending meme, but I've participated in a lot of them. If you want to see a recent one's questions/code, here's one that was held on DreamWidth not that long ago.

I have a DW but was too busy to figure out how to mirror/cross-post so it's just stagnating there. I think a bit of the inactivity may be due to people's circumstances changing...I mean, the growth from "student" to "real job" and etc. Or "real job" to "wife/husband" to "parent"...Idk, though. I don't have any statistical analyses to back that up.

Ha yeah, and then you turn around and are like, "Where did all of these extremely young people come from?" There is an element of "Hm, We've now been here for quite a while." I've gone through like four fandoms. But I'll be here for a while more yet i think. I might start writing about math more often. But I do think I will be on here for a good while longer doing silly fannish things as well.
