Orange cat: mystery solved!

He belongs to one of my neighbors. Hopefully this incident will get her to start scheduling him for regular vet exams, anyway, even if he is an "outside" cat. He had ticks and tapeworms, and he regularly showed up at our door at 6 in the morning, meaning he probably spends his nights outdoors. She says he likes to go out and be outside, well she should at least guard him against insects and stuff. And he still can't defend himself!

Yeesh. I've had outdoor cats before, and regular vet visits are particularly important. No one would have mistaken my last cat for a stray. (I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines at the time, and my cat grew twice as big as everyone else's, because I had her vaccinated, de-wormed, and properly fed. And she'd be home every morning to sleep on my bed by my feet and bite my ankles when they moved under the blanket and she assumed it was the attack of the deadly ankle-monster.)

People who treat their pets like that don't deserve pets. I think that, if Mr. Orange keeps turning up at your house, you should find him a home where he'll be appreciated.

Yeah, easier said than done. I mean, I talked with her on the phone and she said she takes him to the vet (a different one than the one I take my kitties to), and that she keeps him inside when winter comes around. He was the product of some stray orange cats and they got him fixed when he was younger. Then she wanted to be able to bring him inside to be an inside/outside cat in the winter and her husband said he couldn't come inside unless he was declawed so they got him declawed.

And that though declawed he apparently still brings in chipmunks and other things to their door. But I still think as soon as they declawed him they should have made him a permanently indoor cat. Apparently he started hanging around our house just about the same time they got a second St. Bernard dog.

Outdoor cats. I've had them (or rather, my dad always ended up letting the cats go outside, whether it was a good idea or not.) But letting a declawed cat go outside?? *facepalm* People, I do not understand them. (My feelings on declawing in general are distinctly not of the warm and fuzzy variety as it is.) GAAH.

Glad the little guy has a home. Are you going to get the neighbor to pay you back for the vet stuff? She should at least buy you a present or bake you something. Though paying you back would be better.

Oh I am quite against declawing cats too. She says he still catches mice and squirrels and stuff and can climb trees (he does have his back claws), but she also got him declawed because it was the only way her husband would let him be an inside cat for the winter (orange cat seems to have been the child of strays and gradually adopted over time). So I feel doubly bad becuase he can probably remember having claws and is mystified to why they no longer work. Not to mention it's like taking a person and cutting off the tips of their fingers at tje first knuckle :(

My family took in a cat who'd been declawed in the front claws by a previous owner. Not a good situation for the cat.

This entire situation just pisses me off beyond belief. I'm so sorry you even have to deal with it. I wish people weren't so... somethingsomething.

Wait... they declawed a cat which they allow outside for prolonged periods including overnight? What the actual fuck? At least Mr. Orange seems to have adapted and has discovered his own ways to get food and vet attention.

Yeah, he apparently goes outside almost exclusively at night! I saw him again on our porch tonight; he has a collar now and is looking a little healthier after his frontline treatment and his de-worming shot.

Mr. Orange... :D My sister has a cat, his name is Dewey, but everyone just calls him Mr. Orange. It must be a good orange-cat name :)
