Live and learn
Aug. 19th, 2014 01:17 amI meticulously put in a bunch of tiny pleats at the top of Nefertiti's cape by the stabilizing ribbon about 2 inches from the edge, and I'm thinking now what I should have done is wide gathering stitches there instead, and put in meticulous tiny pleats at the very top that I could have starched and set. So she has the start of a cape (unfinished) but I'm thinking I could have done better on it. Also the pleats turned out looking better in the back than the front too.

After all my thoughts about different fabrics, I ended up going with this sheer somewhat crinkly kind of drapery fabric I got months ago at Jo-Anns. It drapes really well and it has some texture to it that will do in place of crinkling the whole thing. First I had to lay it out and cut a piece for the cape and save enough for the skirt as well. And navigate around kitty claws

First add the top hem. 108 inches of hem. Well I ended up not using all of that, but I did hem all 108 inches. Nine feet of hem in a fabric that really didn't take creasing well. Though I did learn later on in the process that starching it would have helped with that.

After the top hem I pinned pleats to the decorated trim I got for the top. Then I sewed the top and bottom of the trim, and starched and pressed the crinkles into the top.

Like so! The back is folded over a few inches here: I made it a bit longer than it needed to be.
Detail:

I will try the other way (gathering and then pinning/starching the tips) for the trim down the side. But not tonight. Also if I have time I might cut away the sheer fabric from over the decorative buttons and make them stand out more. but I think it looks okay as is too.
I should go to bed.
