Realized that last Thursday the 8th was my 10-year LJ anniversary. Ten years of math, fandom, fic and costuming. Not a bad decade, I suppose. Here's to the next ten...

I got a journal after seeing friends from my Farscape mailing list with accounts at ScaperCon '03. I guess for online fandom in general it's been since 1997? That was the summer I discovered the X-files Gossamer archive and realized that there were stories out there, for free, that were better than the published stuff :) So yeah, sixteen years of official online geekdom.

Planning to! I started up on FF.net with Harry Potter, but now that I got into DW, LJ has proved a lot better to interact with great authors… FF.net has nice forums as far as HP is concerned, but for Doctor Who I could only find roleplay and I'm not interested in that… (I got my journal after the lovely honeynoir recommended several authors, most of which were on LJ—it was convenient, then it grew addictive :))

I just checked and 21 April 2003 -- happy 10 years, all around!!

As soon as I saw this post I knew that I had to be around the 10 year mark; I got an LJ right before graduating high school because all my friends had one (most of them gave up years ago...). I shudder to even read some of the earliest entries - I remember what a naïve, crazy person I was back then. Hah.

Congrats to you as well :D We didn't graduate high school that far apart (8 years) but it was definitely in the pre- v. post- online world. My senior year I remember a kid coming back to visit from college and giving the teacher his email address. I'd never seen one before, had no idea how to even get to IRC or email or anything like that and had never seen '@' used in text. Someone said that web sites and email addresses would soon be as ubiquitous as telephone numbers on TV commercials and magazine ads and the like, and I couldn't really fathom it.

I remember what a naïve, crazy person I was back then. Hah.

I think in my experience, grad school helps with the former but well, not so much the latter. ((Hugs you))

Thanks :) Have I figured it out? Well I stuck with what I like, anyway. I think I picked out my layout when I upgraded to a paid account and haven't changed it since! :D

I like to change my layout every now and then, just because - although I'm a bit more cautious now in case I accidentally wind up stuck with the horrible default.

(And I hit 5 years on 21st Jul, I just checked. Amusingly, I noted the date in my diary so I wouldn't miss it... but I did anyway. Pfft. July didn't exist, it was a stupid month.)

Indeed. I've made almost all of my entries prior to like 2007 or 2008 private, just on account of... I don't know, cleaning up after myself or some such? Things like fic and recipes are still public. And I used the lj book website to get a pdf of all of my old stuff (including comments). I used to link to my old Stat account for things like pictures... bummed that most of my Scarran progress pics have gone away. But it's definitely good to have a record. Also frightening to see me talking about my thesis proposal topic (the FIRST one) as early as 2004. Yipes!

Oh wow, that's...well, a long time, to say the least O_O I think that's only about 4 years younger than LJ itself, which is impressive in of itself.

Heh, I do have some flisters still who have been around longer than I have. I got into it from Farscape fandom, but my online presence started with X-files, hence my LJ name. It kind of scares me that the X-files is older than many bona-fide adults in the world now.

It seriously just boggles my mind that there's people who're actually younger than X-Files. I mean, Star Trek is also a bit older than a lot of adults, but the idea that a show that started airing in my childhood now being older than legal adults now is just weird.
