Some speculation about the Doctor Who Series Finale

The only things I've seen are the trailer at the end of Nightmare in Silver, and the "He said, she said" prequel*. I also read about 3/4 of this spoiler-free review. (LOL I also love how "official" reviewers announce subjective opinion as fact). Anyhow, a thought...


What if the Doctor isn't a Time Lord? I mean, don't get me wrong, he's obviously got the physiology--two hearts, regeneration, etc--but what if that was also a way of hiding something else? If you believe what he says in movie canon, he's "half human on his mother's side" which could just mean he's not cardstock Time Lord.

Either that, or what if he's somehow ALL of the Time Lords?

I think Clara may be some kind of failsafe for the fields of Trenzalore? Like, somehow she gives him a way to tell the truth that doesn't also reveal his secret? But I don't know. Before the reset in episode 10 She said she saw him in the book about the Time War... how did she know the book was talking about him?

Anyway, one way or another we're going to find something out next week. I hope it doesn't further and/or hopelessly Joss my WIP-o-Doom. Which I've been thinking about trying to pick up again, but last time I looked at it I ended up erasing four sentences and then throwing it aside again before I did any more damage. I should write the bits that come after this hard part. But still, there's no way I'm going to be able to finish and post the whole thing before whatever big reveal on Saturday is going to have us rewinding all of our tapes and looking for clues.

*PS: I agree with livii that the prequel was rather uninspiring. The whole thing was just, flat. Like it was trying to be some kind of stylized Greek Chorus or something but didn't have the writing chops for it. Also, I'm going to start adding "On the fields of Trenzalore" to the end of all my fortune cookie statements from now on.

The possibility that we'll all be horribly let down by the big reveal is pretty high, so keep on with tradition and write it how you think it ought to be. Ain't that what fanfic is for?

Ha, well, you do have a point. I already had to change a ton of things in the WIP-o-Doom when we found out who River Song was ;)

DUDE. Write what you want. ALL my stuff seems to be AU - so write it as a potential AU - we'll all enjoy your work either way it rolls...

I'd go with what others have said - I've been tooling around for a while now with this longish 50th anniversary fic I hope to have finished by November 23, and the longer the current series has gone on, the more completely it seems to be Jossing the bits of that I've already written...but I quite like those bits! So I'm just going to follow my own path and go AU, I guess. Ah well. As long as you like the end the result, that's the main thing.

I thought the prequel was fairly pointless and meaningless, tbh. As for the finale...I tell myself it's almost certain to be a let down, but the various pics and trailers and so on (I've been actively avoiding the real spoilers I've been told are out there) are intriguing me. I hope it's at least a halfway decent lead into the anniversary special - setting my sights low to avoid disappointment. ;)

I didn't understand the point of the prequel. It was a little riddle-y and I'm sure once the episode airs, it will make sense. But dammit, we should be able to get something from a 3 minute video that is so obviously attempting to throw us a bone. Oh wait....I'm thinking about the ingenuity of Bad Wolf and that bit of cleverness hasn't yet repeated itself.

I did, however, notice that in each "view" (the he said, the she said parts), the items/artifacts in the background were character specific, but I couldn't quite tell what some of it was and I wasn't about to freeze frame every second. I did catch that portrait of Clara, and obviously one of her dresses, and some other things of the Doctor's that I've now forgotten. I did like the museum-y feel to it, because I've liked the episodes set in museums or with a museum-y theme.

I feel like him being all of the Time Lords would probably wreck some pretty serious mental issues for him. It might just be that his name or identity is somehow tied up to something that's much more important, which has been what I've been running on as a rough idea, except Journey seemed to indicate that the name itself wasn't that important?

IDK, at the point I'm pretty much going to unsurprised of how much of a letdown it's probably going to end up being.

Yeah, I can't figure out why Clara would recognize his true name in the book, and be able to tie it back to him as well. But like the rest of Moffat's finales, I'm expecting this one to have some kind of left turn and resolve very little.
