Right, a few nitpicks:
- Why take the TARDIS? I guess I'm wondering why she was sick in the first place... possibly for the same reason all the other ships were sick, I guess. I'll have to watch it again to be sure.
- PS I love the Doctor hugging her when he finds her in the sickbay. Right, that wasn't a nitpick.
- Why would the Siren change her MO for the Doctor, Rory and Avery when she grabs them and just plunks them down on the deck instead of putting them in stasis?
- I am going to handwave that, in the midst of the storm, the water was still calm. Rory fell overboard and was gonna drown because the seas were finally riled. It's just that they couldn't get the dock water to be all wavy.
Other than that, um, yeah, I loved this episode to teeny tiny bits. Loved the Amy/Rory stuff, loved the Doctor yearning for a cool hat and connecting with Avery, loved Rory putting his faith in Amy and her rescuing him. And where have I seen the boatswain (Lee Ross?) before!? Tell me, fandom, please. It's going to bother me until I can figure it out.
Other things I loved:
- The Doctor adjusting his theories as more evidence presented itself--he wasn't wrong; he was just approaching right at a rather converging Markov-chain-like pace.
- The Doctor breathing on the amulet, ha!
- Hugging the TARDIS! Also, the look on his face when she disappeared D:
- The Siren/Doctor was pretty cool. As were the dead rat-like aliens.
- Speaking of: "All I heard was 'rats'!" LOL and "We're going to need a phrasebook!"
- Swashbuckling Amy was pretty cool, wasn't she? I'm guessing that her antics would have been much more abbreviated if the crew weren't afraid of a single nick.
- The Doctor walking the plank. "Can you do the laugh? Check. Grab yourself a parrot; welcome aboard!" Ha!
- "No! No. This is the treasure of the mogul of India." "Oh good, for a moment there I thought it was yours." Loved that delivery. Also loved how it came back to haunt him, and I think that Matt Smith is getting better at doing angry!Doctor so I believe it. "Your wife, your son! Just how much is that treasure worth to you, man!?"
- Avery in the TARDIS. I adored that scene. And "point me to the ionic regulator". SPAAAAAACE PIRATES!!!!
- Amy continues to grow up, and OMG I actually believe it. The idea of taking responsibility for her husband, and consent forms and such; it's a very adult concept that they touched on there. I actually believed her--her pain, her worry--when she said, "why can't you let me touch my husband?" Loved that bit, I really did. I forgive them the melodrama for that, and anyway it's a far cry from disarming a robot's chest-cum-nuclear bomb with thoughts of love now, isn't it? (Also it's a far cry from admitting your love for your best friend, kissing her and shutting down an ornery proto-TARDIS too, for that matter).
- Did I mention SPAAAACE PIIIIRATES!!!! Because Pirates! In space! *ahem* Right.
- The last scene. "You only call me Amelia when you're worried about me." "I always worry about you." "Go to bed, Pond." Hearts this to tiny bits. And oh Amelia, still with the schroedinger's pregnancy.
- The Eyepatch lady is back. And she said something new. "You're doing fine" or something similar. Which oddly, is what you tell women when they're in labor, sometimes. WTH is going on?
- "Alien bogies". Ha! Reminds me of the X-files. "Mulder, I think it's bile." "How to get it off my hand quickly without betraying my cool exterior?" heheheh.
- Oh and the sickbay was very "Coma" wasn't it?
Well anyway, so there were some leaps of logic and some folks thought it was a bit too quick or weirdly paced. But the thing is, there are always leaps of logic in these kinds of stories. I had no problems with the Doctor telling the siren to go after Rory (aside from the less-than-believable roiling sea), and yeah, okay a bit of a stretch with them all pricking their fingers and not ending up in stasis (maybe because there were more than one at a time?), but all in all, I handwave those bits gleefully and continue to think about SPAAAACE PIIIIRATES!
:D

Date: 2011-05-08 12:39 am (UTC)There are times when I'm able to resist spoilers. This is not one of those times. I do tend to drive all my friends over the edge with this behavior, but I cannot resist. It is a bit fun to drive folks silly this way.....see, I really am evil.
Am watching last week's episode as I type this. Frell, I really do love this show and this doctor and all the rest of the characters.

Date: 2011-05-08 05:57 am (UTC)I had enormous fun watching it; the Doctor was brilliant, and I adored all the Amy/Rory stuff (I think I have a new OTP, to be honest, and that's not something I've said more than twice in my fannish life). The plot holes were... um, more obvious than usual, but my ability to handwave, for this show, is great as long as it entertains me.
Which... SPACE PIRATES!

Date: 2011-05-09 01:04 am (UTC)And yes, Amy/Rory, I am totally seeing it! The way she said "this isn't a film! What if you die?" or what that line was... oh, I think part of it is that Karen's acting chops are coming in this series, she's been really great.
And the rest of fandom is harshing my squee! Well, not everybody but honestly I'm gonna stop reading old school fanboy rants and "official" blog posts. *sighs* I am starting to be able to suss out the kind of fan that Moffat meant when he says, "some of them don't really understand what this show is about."

Date: 2011-05-08 01:32 pm (UTC)I really enjoyed this episode because Amy was so proactive (especially after being trapped and strapped to a chair in the previous one), saving the Doctor and saving Rory and generally being possessive and a little bit vulnerable at the thought of him fancying someone more than her.

Date: 2011-05-09 01:21 am (UTC)That was my first reaction to that bit, but then I decided that I kind of liked it--Amy has a tendency to assume that she's the rightful object of affection (esp. re: Rory) and it was nice to see that she felt vulnerable. I think it played well into the whole Amy/Rory thing this ep, because she's now conscious of what it would mean to her to lose him in any way.

Date: 2011-05-09 11:20 am (UTC)OMG character development! And it's character development that doesn't involve Rose-like levels of "THE DOCTOR MAKES ME BETTER I WILL NEVER LEAVE HIM!"
*snort* Right, exactly. Growing up involves becoming independent and making your own choices, not forever leaning on one person.

Date: 2011-05-10 12:26 am (UTC)the roomie speculates that perhaps it means Amy is both pregnant and not pregnant - a Schroedinger's pregnancy if you will - until a "path" is chosen; like, she's pregnant!neutral because the timelines are still in flux or sommat.
i explained that badly but rather liked her theory.
