I wonder if there would be interest in organizing/staging some kind of fandom roller derby event for next year's D*C? Like, roller derby versions of awesome female characters from different shows/genres/what-have-you, and a tournament. How would one go about trying to arrange that kind of thing? (ETA: and where?)


ETA: omg, now I am imagining eg, a showdown between one team of Dalek girls and one team of kick-ass companions (Ace McPain, Bad Wolf, Melanie Bushwhack, etc). STOP, BRAIN, YOU HAVE A THESIS TO WRITE

That sounds fantastic. I can't say I'm in, since I neither attend DragonCon nor roller skate, but I think it would be a load of fun for whoever cosplayed and skated. Although, I imagine most of the high fantasy heroines would need to take in their skirts somewhat...haha.

On the other hand, can you imagine Ace McShane as a roller derby girl? That would be totally awesome. (ETA: or Rose Tyler as the Bad Wolf: she disperses the pack into atoms!)

HAHAHA, Ace is totally a roller derby girl. All she needs are skates. I bet Amy Pond would be pretty good at roller derby, too. She's already got the costuming down pat.

Oh, man, we could do a Stargate team versus the Farscape team you mentioned below. HOW AWESOME WOULD THAT BE!?!?!?

(there is the difficulty that actual Derby teams have a large-ish number of players what with the constant subbing in and out but we could make it work somehow)

Yeah, there would most likely have to be an element of "real" derby and an element of showmanship, I believe, to make it work. For example, short 'halfs' instead of the usual 30 minutes. Or, we could mix and match teams from several fandoms to make a real team. Depends on how much of a real vs staged tournament we'd want to do.

In the future, remind me not to read this sort of stuff before I've finished my coffee. Not because I need to be awake or anything, but because it's more difficult to suppress the snarfing reflex for hot beverages.

I think "Hammond of Texas" needs to coach this team.

I love doing funky twists on characters like this! I would totally be down for it, even though I have not skated in... uh. Years, at least, and have no idea where one can actually find roller skates these days.

It would be fun just to do a cosplay group of Derby-esque superheroes or anime folks or the like (I am thinking now of how awesome a Farscape roller derby team would be). If we get enough people interested in doing the costuming part, then maybe we could see what the logistics of an actual tournament would be. :D (ETA: it might be especially fun to do a few little "staged" kinds of things in the meets too, between shortened halfs or something)

I'm a friend of barbiejedi's who mentioned this to me. And I just wanted to say that I'd totally be interested if you wound up trying to organize this.

Cool! I think step one would be to get some folks interested in doing a costuming group of awesome female characters as roller derby-ists. then if we got enough people who were interested in not only the costumes but also playing, we could see if there would be any way at all to set up an exhibition game or something :)

yeah, sure :) There was also talk of doing something like attaching wheels to the sides of shoes for folks uncomfortable with skating. I don't know that I'd be comfortable skating on hills or the nasty pavement outside either. :D
