What's with the Gillan hate?

Slight rant, possibly going to ruffle some feathers...



Maybe I'm just a clueless hack, but I've had no problem with Karen Gillan's acting in the series. A lot of people seem to think she can't act her way out of a paper bag. Maybe I don't notice it because I'm not in the business, like others won't notice science-y errors or something like that. This may put me on a short list of several people, but I think she's doing loads better than, for example, Freema Agyeman did, at any rate (I always think back to that scene in Family of Blood where Tennant is emoting his little heart out, and she just says, "we need the doctor", and sighs at the camera like she's already bored). Can't touch Catherine Tate but Tate's a pretty established phenom. Eye acting, whatever. Even if she's got a bit of camp, well, it's a campy show. I guess you can't really compare her to the Old School companions since that was a different era and a different mode, but then again, Matt Smith's harkening back to that era and nobody's jumping all over him.

Some folks are wondering if she's going to be the official companion next year or not. She's signed on for series 6, so as far as I know she will be. But then again, not sure how they're going to work in a finale around Amy and Rory's wedding, and then put one or both back in the TARDIS for an entire series to follow. Hmm. Unless they get acidentally kidnapped like Ian and Barbara. Hm.

Baby on Tardis sign needed. :D Also gives someone who won't be confused by fast-talking Doctor because won't understand a word anyway. Plus, 907 year old can act his age grandpa-style. :D

I admit to complaining about the eye acting in a previous episode, as it was over the top enough to jump out at me, and I tend to not notice such things much at all. I thought she did pretty well in this episode, but I find her irritating in the Confidentials. She just strikes me as very young and a little overly deliberate or conscious of what she's doing sometimes. And then other times, she's bang on.

The thing is, for the most part, I really like the character, so I'll forgive a little bit of bad acting as long as it doesn't interfere with my enjoyment of the story.

Yeah, she definitely comes off as really young in the confidentials. But then again, she's only what, 22? So she is pretty young! I think my favorite of the confidentials has to be the most recent one though, she is rather cute in it. She does a pregnancy belly dance, lol!

She mumbles. It drives me batshit crazy. I wish to god she'd stop swallowing half her lines. Other than that, she's definitely growing on me. And I'm also down with the character, so it's not as bad as it might otherwise be. Hopefully she'll continue to improve.

I think she does pretty good with what she's given. Victory of the Daleks was kind of a weak script all around, so I can forgive her that. I've not had any trouble understanding her, though sometimes I've had to rewind Matt Smith to catch some of the faster rambling.

But I also think John Barrowman is painfully, bafflingly unwatchable and lots of people seem to think he's great, so...tomaytoes, tomahtoes, I might just get bugged by different things.

Oh, me too. I liked him in the original Moffat two-parter, but the early Torchwoods were kind of painful.

Oh man, the Moffat two-parter. I think what kills me most is that he had a great part in that and I would really, really love the character if he were played by someone else, but dude, John Barrowman and the Crippling Lack of Comic Timing is not what I signed on for.

Uh, sorry, I sound way more haterade than I actually am, it's just one of those occasional moments of fannish cognitive dissonance. Anyway! Gillan, lovely. Smith, lovely. I didn't think Nine or Donna would ever have competition for my affections, but here we are.
