I know what else this reminds me of! Starship Titatnic! The game that was one of the last stories that Douglas Adams wrote :) Episode Plusplus for that :D

I like also the doctor's comments about the vote and how everyone forgets after five years, democracy in action.

Also am loving (on rewatch) every second of the interactions between Amy and the Doctor. Love the "this is the scary word, find a calm place, go "ommmmm", ha!

"Right then! This isn't going to be big on dignity." Tie-straighening. Bwa!

"hair of an idiot." Ha!

Yeah, first 27 minutes do a pretty good setup, and then they somehow have to wrap everything up in the next 15 and that I believe is where it would benefit from being a two-parter. The whole tower scene is too much of an info-dump. the creature is there, the secret society is there, and also the console and the kids and well, everything they need to wrap stuff up is conveniently right there.

I think I like it better on second watch. Because the first 30 minutes are really lovely.

"six hundred feet down, twenty miles ... I'd say...*sniffs*... Lancashire."

Also, the star whale doesn't eat kids but if it's been around for 300 years it will certainly eat them once they're grown up right? Maybe they just become winders, down below decks I suppose.

I suppose on rewatch I feel a bit better about the end of it. The window scene is very reminiscent of season 2005. The last bit of it -- that window scene is just the part that makes it a bit saccharine for me. Cut out that scene, or even just the anvilicious end of it, and I think it would be a better episode.

"It's always a big day tomorrow-- I've got a time machine. I skip the little ones!"

Okay, so yeah, my beef is just almost exclusively with that window scene. Maybe even the last minute of that window scene. Relieved that I quite liked it on second viewing. Also again, Very Very Starship Titanic. I wonder if they will mention that in the Confidential... (ETA: they don't but they do point something out that I missed completely which is that Liz 10's video image has a very posh accent suggesting it was made many, many years ago)

I love the way the Doctor says, "yes," when amy asks-- you never interfere in the lives of other planets or cultures, unless there's children crying. Like he's just deciding this (or finding it out again) in the moment.

The little girl Mandy is again dressed like a little red riding hood. Moffat likes girls in red dresses.

Also, they're traveling the stars with no engine... since there's no inertia in space, wouldn't that be okay as long as they'd had a great push to start with?

Also also, how effective is a mask when it's molded to shape your face? ;D

So yeah, feeling better about this one, still am curious about next week. In the Confidential they said that this ep (the beast below) was kind of the most fairy-tale dark of the series. So maybe there will be some more explosions and stuff next week...

Good point about how the scene in the tower was utlized based on lack of time. Intriguing to consider how this might have developed if they'd done it in two episodes. More time to put the pieces together. :)

I really liked all those little one-liners by Eleven.

The window scene is very reminiscent of season 2005.

I thought so, too. A bit too The End of the World, where Nine and Rose had a very similar coming to terms sort of conversation. Maybe they need some new writers, an infusion of fresh blood to get them some new ideas.

Sorry about the italics. Apparently my ability to scan what I've written before sending is nil today.
