Happy Birthday! Well, it's still August 26 on the West Coast for a bit, yet, anyway.

Wow, I guess I was really spoiled getting to watch Dr. Who every Saturday afternoon on channel 12, 'cause I've seen most of the old school TV episodes (my favorite old school Doc is #3, John Pertwee). But I'm almost completely ignorant of the audios.

Thanks for the birthday wishes! Yeah, I can get my hands on the old school episodes for the most part, but I haven't had a lot of time to see them. Audios are good because I can listen to them while driving. I really like the audio medium for Doctor Who; it works really well :) And it's made me a fan of Peri and Mel, which apparently is a bit of an aberration ;)

Ah yes, I saw Time Crash-- It was cute, but I wish they'd gone the non-fannish route on it.

Given a sequence of independent Bernoulli trials each with probability of success p, what the the expected number of trials needed until you see a run of r consecutive successes?

Ah, that's a Markov chain type question. I believe the answer is:

sum_{i = 1}^{R} ( 1/p^i )

The reasoning is, it is essentially a geometric progression if the sequence cannot be "restarted" at any point. For geometric, the expected value is just 1/(prob of sequence).

But each time the sequence can be restarted in the midst of a run, then missing the sequence at a particular time not only messes with the current attempt, but with future attempts, and you need to add more expected time. So if you were looking for, eg SSFFSF, there are no places that could be restarted, so the expected value is 1/(p^3q^3).

But if you were looking for SSFFSS, it can be restarted twice, once if you get to SSFF, and once if you get to SSFFS. So if you miss at any of those steps, you've also missed on a possible start to the next sequence, so the expected value is 1/(p^4q^2) + 1/(p^2) + 1/p. [= 1/Pr(SSFFSS) + 1/Pr(SS) + 1/Pr(S)]

since you can restart A sequence of R successes at any point in the sequence, that is how I got the above summed answer. sorry it's not very clear, I'm going from some old homework solutions I wrote about (yeesh) 7 years ago...

Ah, I had not thought of doing a Markov chain approach. I believe your reasoning is correct--at the very least, it passes in the limiting cases (p=1 gives expected value R, and expected value goes to infinity as R does). Thanks for the help.

no problem. It also definitely works for p=.5, R = 2 since the textbook I have gives the answer as 6 in that case (1/(1/2) + 1/(1/4)).

You can do a formal proof with first step analysis, but the particulars of it elude me at the moment.

Hi! Sorry, I was going to leave a note about the friending and then got distracted away on something else. I'm not doing much fannish stuff now (it's hockey season!) and haven't been doing many lj entries but I imagine my pace will pick up again when the new series starts.

Heh, I need to update that list. I think I've fallen behind a smidge on the new BF releases. I have a long commute and for a while was listening to an audio per day when driving to/from work, that's how I caught up :)

I have seen a few more classic eps too, even some with Leela and at least one Key to Time ep. I do want to see more of everybody, but our Internet service frowns upon large bandwidth so I've been taking it slow. Probably I would benefit from a Netflix account at any rate :D

When it comes to Classic Who I am largely the annoying person who leaps up and down in the corner, going but you must see this! :lol: I am lucky - I have rather a scary amount of them on video or DVD these days. I forget how much harder it can be for other folks, especially on different continents.
