Why no, I haven't been flitting back and forth from my desk to the break room to keep up with the US Open... Oh who am I kidding? (ETA: spoiler cutting just in case [livejournal.com profile] kalypso_01 TiVo'ed it)

After a pressure-cooker 18th and a total of 90 holes, Mediate and Woods are STILL TIED! OMFG Sudden Death at the 7th!!!

ETA: Mediate drives into the bunker and punches out past the green, then chips for a 20-ft par shot. Woods drives to the fairway and plunks the ball down 20-feet from the hole, has a chance to win on a birdie shot but puts it about 2 inches short-- great read. Tiger taps in for par. Mediate must make his putt to keep the sudden death alive and he MISSES! Tiger wins!

Man, I do like Woods a lot and it's cool to see him win after such a battle through the first four days. But at the same time Mediate's a local (he's from Greensburg) and an all-around nice guy who I don't think has ever been on this kind of stage before and maybe had never won an open... I'm sorry to see him lose. I'm sorry to see either of them lose but somebody had to. What a tournament though. Kind of a letdown end to it (it's more cool like yesterday when someone holes to win or stay alive, as opposed to missing so the *other* guy wins, bah), but overall a very exciting tournament. I know, I know, I just used "exciting" to describe golf. What can I say? I tell it like I see it ;)

Aw, I was really rooting for Rocco. But man, that was one hell of a game of golf.

we left the house at 6:30 am, got to SD around 8am and hooked up with jason's friend who drove us to the entrance. we bought tix from a scalper at the entrance - half off face value ($150 for the pair - they included "trophy club" access, which turned out to be totally worthless since the bar shut down after the match - we could have gotten grounds tickets for $50 or less each, but oh well).

We had to check EVERYTHING we had with us - no cell phones, no cameras, no bags over 8" x 8"... so we don't have any pictures :(

When we got in the pair was on 6, so we camped out at 8 right in front of the green. We watched 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, first half of 13 (green was mobbed), skipped 14, then watched 15 (rocco birdies to go one up - tiger pars after a 2nd shot from the bunker on the 9TH HOLE FAIRWAY!), watched 16 from the grandstands, skipped 17, "watched" 18 - but it was mobbed... then ran over to 7 to watch it play out - we could see everything but we were probably 75 yards away.

Then when we were walking back to 18 after it was all over, the police stopped the crowd right in front of us and the carts passed first with tiger and then rocco (poor rocco, i could see the total shock/devastation on his face - he was wiping his eyes either from sweat or emotion).

It was pretty cool.
