Missed it last week but lucky for me 'twas the 2-parter, so that means I didn't have to wait a week for the conclusion. Reaction under the cut.

I was all prepared to be thoroughly underwhelmed by this two-parter, but instead it really surprised me. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sure, I suppose the emo environmental anti-war message was a bit clunky, but I handwave that because it was a great action-packed episode, with some great character moments too.

I loved that everyone had something to do in this serial-- and that there was humor and action and drama (and oh yes a Rose cameo too! Looks like she's trying to get a message to the Doctor! What could this be about???). Martha's scene with the dying clone was well done, as was the reunion after Rattigan switched places with the Doctor. Tennant got a little shouty but UNIT put up with him and knocked him down a peg too. I mean, how awesome was it that UNIT came through with a bit of a stratagem themselves??? Reminded me of their bid in "The Mind of Evil" when they took back the prison.

Also, that was the fastest atmospheric fireball *ever*. Think about it; it must've been moving at about 500 miles per second to go that fast. Ah, whatever, *handwave* I was cheering anyway! I actually really liked the genius kid-- as a character, I mean I liked that I found him pretty reprehensible and pitiable at the same time. I thought the Sontarans were done well-- though, they weren't short back in the day, were they? Anyway, they did look a bit weird but I liked their back story, and they were suitably menacing while still being a bit laughable, which was cool. I liked the Doctor's "Now we're in trouble" after he set off the atmosphere. I also liked his baiting the Sontaran General about being a coward and then switching to cartoons. heh.

But, back to the awesomeness that is Donna Noble, taking out the Sontaran on the ship, keeping her cool and facing danger and noticing the lack of sick people!. Donna=Awesome! And her mum rescuing gramps with an axe. Ha! And I love Donna's granddad too, and the reactions of both of them when they met the Doctor-- "Oh, it's YOU!" hee! And now next week we have more Martha Jones, and she's in the whole, OMG get me home you idiot! Role, which is total Tegan Old School for the win. Lucky for her, the Doctor's gotten better at piloting the TARDIS since then. I wonder what the deal is about his "daughter"-- is she another Time Lord or a clone or something? They did make a point of showing the Doctor's suspended hand, so maybe she's a product of his genes or the strange planet-people loomed her or something.

(Couple of quick things-- someone noted Donna's big ring, kind of ugly ring, and now I'm wondering if she didn't pick up the Master's ring from the ashes of the fire--- arg! No spoiling, it will come out eventually if I am right or just hyper-aware. But, in that same shot from the first ep, Donna's fingernails are plainly painted red. When we see her again at the end of episode 2 talking with her granddad, her fingernails are, oddly enough, painted blue. Whatever for? ETA: well, she did have a day to get cleaned up, and also she did change clunky rings too.

EATA: Was anyone else reminded of Vengeance on Varos with the big Acid-tank thing?)

All in all, this season is still doing really well. Can't wait for next week!

In other news I listened to the first two-ish parts of "The Haunting of Thomas Brewster" last night (it was late, I fell asleep). I think the story is a good one but something about the production is just falling flat. Thomas' mum is frighteningly creepy, she literally scared me when they were in the boat. Other than that though, there's a lot of years playing through pretty fast, and the musical interludes are-- odd. Also, from the viewpoint of Big Finish stories, if I didn't know better I'd think that "Oranges and Lemons" was the only song that ever existed in Britain before 1930. I'm not sure what to think of the Doctor's new "assistant" (Robert, is it?), except I did laugh when he had to leap onto the train. Maybe it was my tired state, but I was having trouble keeping track of who was whom, and visualizing this episode. I'm not giving up on it, because I do like Five and Nyssa and I do want to see what happens next, but still, there's something not quite right in either the direction or the production or something. I get the feeling it should be a much better story than it is, you know?

I should have waited and watched both parts of this whole story together, because I didn't really like the first part, and when I stopped to think about it I realized I rarely like the first parts of two-parters and it's always the second part that makes or breaks it for me.

As a whole, I agree that this was a fun episode. I really enjoyed it. The science is kind of especially bad, but that's not what I'm here for, so whatever. And there was so much other good stuff!
