Pumpkin pics

So I spent a good deal of yesterday afternoon pumpkin-carving. I haven't gotten candles or anything yet. Planning on doing that this afternoon. Anyway, here are the fruits of my labor.


This vampire pumpkin looks frightened. What ever could be the matter?

So I guess our vampire pumpkin meddled with the wrong town. I had a conceptual drawing for a reference, so the carving was actually pretty quick. It took a lot longer to make the farm implements and the foam hands (both of which I did last weekend) than to carve the pumpkins. The tools are stripped and sanded sticks with some duct-tape covered wooden shims, a bit of burlap, and four tent tines for the rake. The hands are some foam from an old flip-N-you-know-what futon, hastily cut out and structured with millenary wire. I also gave all these guys a good coating with clear spraypaint to lengthen their lives. Anyway, there's a nice little hill in our front yard that I think these guys would do well on. I can put the Vampire guy down by the mailbox, and have the angry mob massing at the top of the hill and starting to make their way down. I just have to make sure that there's enough room to account for my admittedly poor "backing up the driveway" skills, without the danger of wiping him out.

The conceptual drawing. I didn't have time to make the vampire wings. If I get around to it, it will be stretchy black cloth again shaped with millenary wire.

Thanks! I'm getting pretty excited about the party, but there's so much left to do! Mostly it's essential stuff like food and drink-- I think some of my more ambitious decorating plans are going to have to go by the wayside.

Too cute! With the freakishly warm weather we've been having here, I haven't dared to carve a pumpkin. I know it would rot well before 10/31.

Thanks! It's been pretty warm here too, but should be cooling down soon. I laquered these ones to help their longevity, and will be happy as long as they last until next saturday. Dunno if I'm up for carving another six if these ones bite the big one before then...

Hooray, I love it!

Here's an event you would have enjoyed - last Saturday was the Pumpkin Festival at City Hall Plaza in Boston. Last year they set the record for most jack-o'-lanterns lit at once (30,128). There had to be roughly as many this year, too. I took pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/rock_biologist
