I finally finished reupholstering the posts and base of the cat tree! We originally built this jungle gym back in January 2005, and in the intervening years the kitties shredded the rugs we originally put on the posts and base. I have been wanting to reupholster it for a while so that it looks nice in our nice new sun room. I ordered a 10lb order of sisal rug remnants mid September ($35), and worked on removing all of the gross old carpet and putting the base together a few months after that. Last weekend and this weekend I finished the base and the posts.

ETA: And here's what it used to look like, for comparison:

Kitties should be so happy with new things to scratch on! (I will not show the pictures to my cats lest they become jealous.)

Nice! My kitty would be jealous if he saw that! Ours is getting real ratty.

That came out really nice.

I'd be curious if someone's done research on the durability of materials for this sort of thing. Experience shows that nothing lasts forever, but there must be something with superior cat scratching durability. Then again, maybe it's best to plan for replace-ability rather than durability.

If I was a cat, I'd want to be one of your cats!
