Otherwise known as "the thing I didn't think would take this long to do." I really hope it's the only thing. Though there is plenty more picky stuff in this outfit (hello, going to add all of the bodice studs by hand when I get to that).

No pics on the hat just yet; I just painted the edges underneath the trim gold in case they show at all. So I'm waiting for it to dry. Also all the mid-piece trim is attached with fabric-tac (which I am also waiting for it to dry) and duct tape on the back. This was a very picky thing to do and I'm relatively pleased with it but I wish I'd left more room between the panels, because the real hat band has more space between each panel. Ah well.
Some progress pics:

I used the paper hat pattern I made to make the right measurements for a band going around the middle.

Adding the lines required finding the focal point of the curve and drawing "parallel" lines relative to that.

Painted each panel.

cut out all but a guide line for the bits between each panel. This took a while. Then I sewed the trim on the top and bottom (basted it anyhow), and glued the middle sections in with fabri-tac and duct tape. That took another long while. Especially because I had to go over the trim piece with some clear spraypaint and then a layer of Perma-wet, otherwise the gold spraypaint that I had used on the trim piece was rubbing off all over the place and leaving what looked like glitter all over the panels (and everything else around it).

The underside. Yes this whole hat is held together with duct tape.
There are still two more pieces of the band to do... the parts that come down from the back to her temple. However, since they don't ring the whole hat, they should be easier to do (no conic sections I don't think). I'm going to put the band on and then measure out the last pieces. Well, I'm not going to do that tonight. I am going to go to bed tonight.
ETA: one mock-up pic, put together this morning:
