Somebody at the BBC is getting fired: First five scripts of Doctor Who Series eight leaked online.

ETA: Radio Times article says they were leaked after being sent to Miami for translation into Spanish.

I'll be avoiding spoilers, thanks.

The primary reason I'm sorry this happened is not me being spoiled, because I will try to stay away from spoilers, but that there will undoubtedly be an uptick in the OMG MOFFAAAAAAATTT!!!! hysteria because of this. Of course, that's a case of "sun rises in east ... MOFFAAATTT! ... Gravity works - MOFFAAATT!!!' Gah. Can we give it at least a quasi-temporary rest?

Love him, hate him, or you know, be somewhere in the reasonable in-between, but at least let it wait until the season's begun and keep the air as clear of wittering as possible until then ...

*is irrationally grumpy about the whole thing*

Whups; should have made myself more clear - yes, definitely in response to people reading the leaked scripts and becoming apoplectic about [fill in the blank] and specifically using it as an excuse to Moffat-bash. Or Clara bash. Or Capaldi bash.

I'm actually fairly hopeful that those who see the scripts will restrain themselves not only from spoiling what's in them, but from ranting about the stories. Or, frankly, even saying anything positive about them. I just don't want yet another excuse for people to fight over the show runner or the actors.

Aww, shit...man...that's just...*hands*

Yeah. I'll be skipping it myself. That is just terrible.

And really who wants to read the scripts when they can just wait and WATCH THE SHOW?! I mean, really?

Aaaaaaawkward. Though, I would be interested in seeing the scripts AFTER watching the episodes to see if there were any last minute edits.

ETA, reading the news articles suggests that the filmed episodes themselves were also briefly available. So much face!palm. Though, I am chuffed to learn from the same article that the series premier will be over 70 minutes in length. (not completely believing everything from the internet, but these things both seem fairly plausible)

I've seen the Google cache of the BBC Miami website. Basically, someone didn't hide the index page and so someone was able to waltz in, go to the page and just download the five scripts without any problem. They've since been torrented and passed around. I've seen a lot of discussion about them, and modding at Gallifrey Base has been a nightmare for the past 24-ish hours since no one seems to care that we've had a long standing rule about not discussing torrenting/downloading things illegally since forever. ><

I am just waiting for tabloids to print/post large portions of the stories. It's a huge mess, but as much as the BBC is pleading with people not to discuss things or share them? Not gonna happen. :(

Believe me, they already are doing this. I've had to deal with moderating all sorts of crap on gallifrey base since last night, including someone screeding about how [redacted] should be sueing Moffat for "ripping them off" (not even remotely true). They're reading all sorts of shit into things and projecting meaning/intention that just isn't there.

Ah, some people dont mind spoilers at all. I've been spoiled majorly for plenty of shows/films/books over the years, and it hasn't ruined my personal experience of watching/reading the actual product once I finally get to it. But that's me. *shrugs*

There's been a lot of huge anticipation about S8 and people don't have the patience to wait another 6 weeks for "Deep Breath" let alone the other four that have leaked. I'm not making excuses for them -- just saying it's happened. I cannot judge given I tend to read the end of a book first, and am extremely impatient myself.

I generally avoid spoilers, but I know with Who Fandom it isn't always possible, but I still give it a go. I just...like being surprised. The only time the 'spoilery' ruined it for me, was for the Doctor kissing Rory. A friend of mine jumped the gun and squealed about it to me and I hadn't seen it yet. I wasn't best pleased. But my 'avoid-at-all-costs' spoilery policy is mostly just my own hangups.

I didn't even know the names of the eppies, lol! That's how unspoiled I've remained. *Grins* I'm rather excited myself - and I'm all down with people sharing spoilers (though I'm not down with some poor schmoe likely losing his job over it all), just as long as they warn and keep behind cuts what they've seen. I avoid even reaction posts for such things. People can spoil and share all day long - just as long as they try to remember there are some of us that aren't keen on it. Even with my own reaction posts, I try to keep things behind a cut. It's just...nicer that way.

I've had to quell the urge to jump to the back of a book a few times myself, lol!! I've had to school myself in the art of patience - and for me, the rewards are greater when I do that. But I don't expect it to be the same for everyone...

My brain hurts from all the crazy in the past 24 hours. It's amazing how many times people can be told "please do not ask for links or torrents OR tell people where they can find these things as it's illegal" and they still refuse to acknowledge it.

We're taking a hardline stance at GB because the BBC (and BBC Worldwide) does pay attention to the site, and no one wants to get into any legal trouble with them because a poster was sharing things they shouldn't (whether it's info, videos, music or scripts). When they've asked us in the past to remove certain info, we've complied. This is no different.

However, if the script info hits the mainstream media, then it's out of our hands.

The name of the first episode was officially released by the BBC in a press release along with the first teaser trailer *and* the official premiere date so that's confirmed, official and not a spoiler. Anything else that has been mentioned/rumoured before the script leak is unconfirmed, and even the other four script titles are uncomfirmed because titles are always changed at the last minute. "Forest of the Dead" was "River's Run" pretty much until a few days before it aired, iirc. Moffat himself called it "River's Run" when he "accidentally let it slip" (yeah right) at a live episode commentary thingee at Gallifrey One.

I'm a spoiler-phile and freely admit it, but I would never EVER spoil anyone without their express permission. Unless it's something that was out in the mainstream media (like the title of episode 1 apparently) and I assumed everyone knew about it. Or casting that's been confirmed in a press release, or someone leaving confirmed in a press release. I am not a patient person myself, so hate waiting. I'm terrible about books, although part of that is to protect myself from nasty surprises like finding out someone's been killed off or whatever. I am not good with that kind of thing at all.

I know quite a lot about the leaked episodes -- but did BEFORE the scripts became available due to people dropping hints (and bigger info) in the Spoiler & Speculation threads on Gallifrey Base. I'm one of the mods who isn't bothered by finding out stuff, so I wade in there to protect other people so they don't have their experience ruined. (see, it's all about THEM! ;))

I'm generally an impatient person, so it's part and parcel. I also like to find out spoilers on my own time, rather than having some jackass do it maliciously and ruin it for everyone (like the people who ran around posting "SNAPE KILLED DUMBLEDORE" on every bloody Harry Potter site/community before Half-Blood Prince was released. :-/) There was someone who got in trouble on GB before S5 aired, and their parting FU post was something about Rory being an Auton. Most people were like "Rory? Who the hell is Rory?" I kept thinking/hoping they were wrong until The Pandorica Opens happened!

The whole spoiler/not spoiler thing is very personal and I'd never judge anyone for their choices as long as they were respectful to other people *and* not breaking the law to obtain info. I actually don't like the sort who sign Non Disclosure Agreements and then break them. :p

People in SPN Fandom were rather malicious with spoilers. I learned early on to NOT go to certain comms (and paddle about happily in my little shallow wading pool), before the season aired. That was...when I actually cared that much about it (but that's a whole 'nother post there, lol).

I found with Who Fandom it was a little harder to avoid spoilers, but people were awesome about it all. I might learn episode titles before the eppie is released (like here), but sometimes I'd miss even THAT...still, little spoilery things with Who I'm not overly fussed about. That is part and partial to the excitement. Hell - to some people, my recent 'teaser-trailer' posts could be considered 'spoilery' (and in SPN Fandom it would be enough to get me flamed...before that person turned around and posted whole synopsis(es) on as-yet-unreleased episodes. I kid you not. SPN Fandom was batshit.

You are awesome about it. [livejournal.com profile] doctor_twelve is easy to navigate - 'spoilers' are placed behind cuts and my personal listy is pretty fantastic about cuts and warnings for posts. So all in all, it could be way worse. And I've found any spoilers I DO get are pretty enjoyable...except for the Doctor-kisses-Rory thing, but that was totally an accident (she got overexcited and forgot to ask before assuming I just knew, lol). So I have no major issues with anyone in Who Fandom and spoilers. And honestly, if you visit places like 'Tumblr' before a season starts, you are pretty much begging to be spoiled.

Dude...still...that kind of sucks though. Wow. Tis fantastic that you are one of those mellow people who don't mind, but...wow, what a headache that could be!! Yeesh. *hugs you in sympathy*

OHhh, dude...wtf. that is just...asshattery. Damn. Fall in love with Rory AFTER you know what may happen to him. And chewing your nails all the while hoping Asshat was Wrong. Och. I do not envy you that, sweetie!

Yeah. That's just...nine-kinds of not-cool. Wow. And you are marvelous about all of this. Believe it or not, I'm more laid back than most (and well assured in Moffat's Trolling Expertise), so I will never set fire to someone who spoils, but happily handwave it until time comes for it to be proven or disproven. I say I maintain a strict spoiler-free policy, but if I wander into the wrong area or post, that is totally on me - and no one else.

Still, I've found most of Who Fandom (for all the laid back 'OMG, this is gonna happen!!!') and its mild spoilers are better than any other fandom - with or WITHOUT their spoilers. I mean, I heard HP Fandom rivaled SPN in asshattery and batshit, but I never really quite grasp it until someone mentions the crazy that occasionally spills out of it...O_o
