eve11So I've just listened to "The Curse of Davros" from Big Finish
Oh Six, you are awesome when you are evil. Meaning of course, I knew it wasn't him from the start and yet it was still fun to listen to Colin Baker play Davros, almost as awesome as listening to Terry Molloy play an understated Sixth Doctor. This was an episode I thought I wouldn't like and it surprised me how much I did. There were some kind of slow or strangely-paced parts but overall it was much more engaging for me than the last few episodes with Six. I think I didn't even listen to the last one all the way through.
But yeah, gotta love the Daleks, and mind-switching. And trying to change the course of history at Waterloo, of course, crazy Dalek plans. And Jared's description of being a Dalek, like being in an enraged temper-tantrum state all the time.
Anyhow, I liked this one a lot.
I also listened to "Army of the Dead" with Eight and Mary Shelley.
It was okay; but less engaging than the above. I do like how easily the Doctor goes from interrogatee to interrogator in that one, but overall it had a lot of elements of telling, not showing. And they are trying to deal with the complications of a 19th century woman and how she would see the world or her relationship with the Doctor, and it kind of falls flat. The part at the end where Mary sees that the Doctor is fascinated by death and horror, to some extent can't help himself but be so, and decides to leave, is a bit too much of a pat solution for me. Maybe I wasn't paying much attention earlier either but the whole "She's fallen for him" angle kind of jumped out of mid-air, and is way overdone. It was done much much better with Charley Pollard anyway. That was the best of those examinations I think, better than anything they even did on the TV series with Rose or Martha. So perhaps I'm setting a high bar, but the Mary Shelley arc kind of fell flat for me. I think the best of the lot was "the Silver Turk", definitely. I did like that one, though had difficulty telling apart the female leads voices sometimes.
