Hey all you guys and gals!

I'm inadvertently a bit buzzed at the moment (homebrew witbier, kegged two days ago, no idea the alcohol content but after one glass I'm guessing 'high'), so am a bit in no state whatsoever to try and do math, which is annoying me. BUT I am in a great state to write about "The Hungry Earth" and the trailer for "In Cold Blood":
I don't have a lot to say about this episode. I wasn't all that enthused going into it, but actually I liked it better than I thought I would. A few nitpicks:
- something about Nasreen bugs me. I don't know if it's the actress or just her very quick acceptance of the Doctor, though I think it might have something to do with the fact that this ep was cut dramatically (down from 60+ minutes) in order to fit within 42 minutes.
- Again, re: cutting the episode down: the whole montage with them preparing for whatever comes up from the surface seemed like quite a stretch for twelve minutes. twelve minutes! And there were several times where the Doctor seemed to miraculously transport from place to place between cut scenes. I don't *think* this has to do with future (eg Jacket) doctor, but then again... we did see Amy and Rory at the beginning, from the future; makes me wonder if it's going to dovetail back into the finale. Anyway, what's frustrating is, why not just say "We've got an hour!" instead of "We've got twelve minutes!". Bah. *handwave*
- A bit hamfisted on the "I WILL save everybody! Promise!" theme. juuuust a bit overdone. ;)
BUT: Other than that... the good and fun stuff
- I love the little kid Elliot. They do a good job of characterizing the family at the beginning. and look at the houses... they are all boarded up except for the one that the family lives in.
- "This is way better than Rio: Rio doesn't have a big mining thing." Oh, Doctor, never change.
- "Who's breaking anything? Sonicking and entering... totally different." Nice line but crowbarred in at the expense of characterising Amy "never could resist a keep-out sign" Pond.
- sunglasses at night. Yeah. "I know who they aaa-re!" :D
- LOVE the interrogation scene with the Doctor and Alaya. "I'm the last of my species and I know how it sits in a heart, so don't insult me." Yeah. In other news, a propos of the trailer for next week in which I'm pretty sure the same actress plays the commander who played Alaya: perhaps she really IS the last of her kind? And she just got herself cloned a bunch of times. except I think Creepy Scientist Silurian is male... anyway... I'm rambling.
- Still not feeling the Nasreen love. Didn't like the whole clapping thing at the end of the Doctor's "best of humanity" speech. But I kinda did like her going all companion on the doctor, and then snapping hissuspenders :D (okay, braces, for you UK folks) braces (ETA:
somedaybitch informs me that it is braces on both sides of the pond, which is cool because it's a much better word than suspenders and I can use it without sounding like a wannabe Brit who tries to use Brit English but still can't manage the accent)
- Vivisection... *is creeped the fuck out*
- my money's on Tony for the one who will break the peace, but only because he got stung and is probably under mind control or something.
- If they are over 21 Km into the ground, why are there roots everywhere? Roots of what?
- I have watched the next-week's preview frame-by-frame like 12 times now. Argh! Captures and handcuffs and escapes and ducking and running down corridors and imminent war and yelling and lizards and gratuitous Doctor hurt! BRING IT ON.
- In other news, I totally want a Silurian costume. I might go about trying to make one over the next year or so for dragonCon next year. Of course, this will also entail me having to get into good enough shape to wear a microdress of mesh. That (not building the mask or doing the makeup or making the gun-thing) is the scariest most daunting prospect of the endeavor.
ETA: I'm going to guess that the evil dissecting doctor guy is actually one of the "good guys", I think. I think it was his voice in the preview (either him or Tony, but I don't think Tony makes it underground?) saying "What are you doing?" and the Commander lady answering "Protecting our race against the apes." Maybe scientists and warriors don't see third eye to third eye? Moe said "Decontamination" before; could be some kind of "cure" to a sting that the warriors put into Amy and Moe, and the Silurian Doctor guy is trying to help them.
Maybe he is the one who's been initiating the underground grave-robbing. In later scenes we see Amy and Moe free and with guns, maybe somehow they get let go. Then again, is it implied that the tunnel is actually coming up from Gladys Powell's grave? That's where Ambrose found Elliot's headphones. Hm.
I'm also not totally convinced that Elliot actually did get taken. If there's an extra Amy and Rory running about then maybe there's an extra Doctor, and he rescues Elliot from the Silurian before it can zap him. BUT then later on in the episode preview we see Nasreen, Elliot, Ambrose, Amy and Moe running through an underground corridor. But then again if Ambrose is down there then maybe Elliot came down (later) the same way she did.
Hmmm.
