That new Doctor

I've never heard of Matt Smith, but overall I'm cautiously optimistic. He's really young, true (ETA: omg, he has flatmates! *dies*), but watching the interviews with him I think he might be able to bring back more of the Tom Baker-esque alien-ness of the character, should he decide to do so. He's gangly and lanky and somewhat strange-looking, and I think he kind of does pull off that "young and old at the same time" look, too. It makes me feel better that Moffat was like, "We were gunning to cast someone older, really, and then he just came along and nailed the part", because in my mind at least, it means that they cast him in spite of his age rather than as a ploy for younger viewers (Stargate Horizons, anyone?). He's got a really expressive face, and it's kind of weird at the same time; they could really emphasize that in his style and makeup, etc. With that brow he can look really dark and foreboding, but he's got a quirky smile too. And I love the part in the interview when he says, "And I'm sort of, taking over that responsibility. It's... exciting... nerve-wracking... exciting.... Exciting." Ha! I think he's got a very youthful voice but there are maybe hints that he could put some oomph behind his lines too, when he needs to.
My only request is please, Moffat, do something with his hair. Anything other than that. Really.
Looking forward to 2010!
