Well, I had purchased a pumpkin for carving, but I didn't have time to carve anything. So today I turned it into pumpking puree. 8 cups of pumpkin puree! That's like four pumpkin pies! Well, I'm currently cooking two pumpkin pies. Let's see how they turn out: I've never made pumpkin puree from scratch before; I hope it comes out okay.

It'll be fine. My dad makes, like, twelve pumpkin pies every year from the Halloween pumpkins.

That's SO cool! Let me know how it works out! (And then maybe post recipes!)

:D

They should turn out fine - I used to turn my halloween pumpkins into pies every year when DB was small, and I could never tell the difference between "from scratch" and "from the can". Happy eating!

i always thought that halloween pumpkins didn't make good pies. like, they're grown too big and end up not being as flavorful as the little pie pumpkins. is there no truth in that?

They're fine. Judging by the little pumpkins my roommates got to cook with this year, they're pretty much the same. If there is any difference, the pumpkin pie spice more than makes up for it. (I could easily believe it's the difference between a nice, ripe standard supermarket tomato and a nice vine-ripened one, but it doesn't matter a heck of a lot if there are other strong flavors. The pies still taste pumpkinny.)

And it certainly doesn't matter if you put a pint of Cool Whip on top!

Mmmm...Cool Whip...

Neither pumpkin pie nor Cool Whip over here. I learned how to make home-made whipped cream (heavy cream + lots o' sugar + fork) early on. No oven, so no pie for me, though. :(

Oh, I am going to meet a friend at a coffee shop that serves pumpkin pancakes on Wednesday. So pumpkin can be had. Just not in pie form. I'll let you know how it is.

Well, when DB was small, I lived in a tiny apartment in the city. His b-day is a week and a half before Halloween, so around his b-day we would paint faces on several small pumpkins (he was NOT to be trusted around candles!) with Magic Markers, and they would form the table centerpiece for a week or so. When they started to seem like they were in the way, we would turn them into pies. As he got older, and we did traditional jack-o'lanterns, we just tossed them out when we were finished with them.
